Another successful clinic sponsored by Neuter Commuter and Lawson Family Fund held May 1 - 4, 2008 altered 80 animals.
AHS plans to hold another clinic May 28-29, 2008 to do more neuters and spays.
Thank you to all the clinic providers and to the tribal members who participate in our programs. Together we make Red Lake a great place for animals and our people!

The Animal Humane Society of Golden Valley and Neuter Commuter of Animal Ark, Hastings teamed up to provide a free clinic to the Red Lake Reservation on April 23 - 27, 2007 serving 460 dogs and cats with vaccination, exam, worming, and other medications. Of these animals, 195 were neutered or spayed. Other procedures included a number of porcupine quill removals and one eyelid surgery.
The very first patient was a bald eagle (migiisii) who had been shot. Richard Defoe found the injured bird on the lakeshore and brought him to the clinic the night before we opened where he received medical attention and was transported to the Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota by Denise Luke and Malyssa the next day. We all hoped and prayed that he would live but, unfortunately, there was no hope for him, and he died but through Richard's brave act, the eagle did not have to suffer a slow painful death and for that we are grateful.
We wish to thank all the volunteers who helped make the clinic a big success. The three vets, Dr. Kim Culbertson, Dr. Charlie, and Dr. Garry Goeman worked tirelessly to help so many animals along with their teams of dedicated vet techs including Mary Salter and Peggy Augustine who is also the Director of the Neuter Commuter. Two other vet techs from AHS were Laurie Neitzke and Christie Daluge who spent many hours of hard work helping the Red Lake animals.
A number of volunteers from the metro area also came to assist to prepare before and during the clinic including Denise Luke, Barbara Bowman,Dee Dee Welles, Lynn Mecum,Colleen Meyer, Lesle Lynch, Malaysa, Ingrid, Jodi Ehlenz, and Melvin Giles.
Funds for the project were provided by contributors to Animal Humane Society at Golden Valley, MN as well as funding from Joan Lawson of the Lawson Family Fund. Joan and her brother Lee worked very hard at the clinic where she said she met so many wonderful people.
A special thanks to Nokomis Paiz for all her work before and during the clinic all the while fostering 4 puppies,( 2 of which were ill) that she found near the Redby dump. Polly McMaster fostered the other 4.
Other local volunteers were Sharae Nevitt, Gerome Winkler, Randy Sayers, Kevin Wolden, Karen Good, Polly McMaster, Aelena Hrabchacova, Sanoma Paiz, Alexis Chaboyea, Willow McDaniel, Wallace Kingbird, James King, Diane Gunderson, Jennifer Wolfe, William Graves, Laura Hall, Pat and Alex Zbitosky.
We also would like to thank Roger Head, Red Lake Tribal Official who provided the facility at the Red Lake Industries Building in Redby. The accomodations for vets and all volunteers were provided by St.Mary's Mission and Convent, Fr.Patrick Sullivan and Sr. Marina.
Dave Conner, DNR and Richard Barrett, Red Lake Forest Products provided funds for food and clinic supplies. The Other Store in Redby provided pop, food supplies as well as lots of kitty litter. Coke Company provided water and banners for advertising.
Whatever your role, it was valuable and appreciated by the community. Once again the people came out in numbers to stand in line and wait patiently with their pets. Thanks to all!!
