The Red Lake Indian Reservation is located in north central Minnesota in portions of Clearwater and Beltrami Counties. The Red Lake Tribe has land holdings of 837,736 acres which is about the size of the State of Rhode Island.
One of the beautiful features of our land is that we maintain habitat for the animals and plants to live. You will notice as you drive around the shores of our lake you do not see cabins or resorts. Instead you see nature at it's best, totally undisturbed and not "developed" as the dominant society calls it.
There are lots of forests and wetlands. It is not uncommon on my drive to work to see many bald eagles, hawks, fox, muskrat, deer, and wolf. This noninterferance by the Red Lake Nation has provided the best life possible for wildlife, the four-footed and winged creature. As habitat in the big world shrinks, we daily hear of animals becoming endangered or going extinct. We deserve an "A+" for our preservation of habitat and land for all future generation.
There is, however, one area we must improve. That is in the care of the creatures entrusted to our care, the domestic dog and cat. In the language of our people, animoosh and gazhigeez. I am believing that in this generation we will make life better for these animals, and in so doing, for ourselves and our children.
